Attorney-at-law
Ryosuke Togi
戸木 亮輔
Greeting
My name is Ryosuke Togi, Esq.
I was admitted to the Japan Bar (Dai-ichi Tokyo Bar Association) in 2012, and practiced as a community-based attorney (machi-ben) at a Tokyo law firm, handling a wide variety of cases including general civil matters (negotiations and litigation), family cases (inheritance, divorce), corporate law, as well as criminal and juvenile defense as court-appointed counsel.
In 2020, I studied abroad at a U.S. law school, passed both the New York State and California bar exams, and then worked at the Marschall Suzuki Law Group in San Francisco. Since January 2024, I have been practicing as the founder of Kaname Partners US, P.C., based in Irvine, California (Orange County), handling a wide range of legal matters.
Before studying in the U.S., I primarily worked on domestic cases in Japan. Even then, however, I frequently encountered matters where Japanese law and language alone were insufficient—for example, contracts or wills drafted in English, cases involving foreign parties requiring communication in English, or inheritance cases with heirs residing overseas that required knowledge of foreign law. On many occasions, I thought, “It would be so helpful if there were an attorney I could consult with easily in such situations.”
Many Japanese attorneys study abroad at U.S. law schools, but most focus on corporate law. Few specialize in general civil matters such as inheritance and divorce, and even fewer remain in the U.S. after their studies to practice as community-based attorneys.
I also initially planned to return to Japan after completing my studies. However, during my time at Marschall Suzuki Law Group in San Francisco, I saw how actively attorneys were serving a wide range of clients, both individual and corporate. I also witnessed firsthand how many local Japanese residents preferred to consult with an attorney in Japanese rather than English. These experiences led me to conclude that remaining in the U.S. and practicing in the same way I had in Japan would allow me to provide meaningful support to many Japanese people.
For more about my decision to remain in the U.S., please see my blog:
Please note: This blog post is available in Japanese only.
Although “America” and “California” may sound somewhat distant or intimidating, I grew up in Kansai and am known for being approachable and easy to talk to. Whether in person or online, please feel free to consult with me.
